Named after former African National Congress Youth League leader Peter Mokaba, who passed away in 2002, the stadium was a host venue during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The old Peter Mokaba Stadium, which still sits in the shadow of the magnificent new venue, hosted Orlando Pirates’ 2-0 victory over Manchester City in the 2009 Vodacom Challenge, but this will be the debut year for the world-class new facility.
The first competitive match played at the new stadium saw South Africa defeat Guatemala 5-0 on May 31, 2010, the biggest win since the country’s reintroduction to international football in 1992.
The ground has no permanent tenant, but hosted 18 Premier Soccer League matches involving various teams in the recent 2010/11 season and has also played host the Blue Bulls Super Rugby franchise in the past, and hopes to stage more rugby in the future.
The facility has a state-of-the-art conference centre, office suites, exhibition centre and restaurant.
